Lung Detox

Lung detoxification is essential for good health. How you breathe has a profound effect on your life and health. Not only does it change how much oxygen is going into your bodies and how much waste is coming out of your bodies, it also affects heart function, immune system function, mood, stress levels, hormone levels, digestion, strength, endurance and a wide variety of other functions.

In short, how you breathe can influence almost every aspect of your health and well being. So, how do you ensure optimal lung function? You do a lung detox program and incorporate these principles into your every day regimen.

How to do a Lung Detox

1. Eat a healthy, whole foods diet.

  • All produce should be fresh and organic when possible.
  • At least half of all vegetables should be eaten raw. The other half should be lightly steamed or baked.
  • Avoid soda and artificial drinks and beverages, aromatic teas and stimulant beverages such as coffee, mint tea, black tea and peppermint tea.
  • Avoid foods high in sugar, especially refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners.
  • Avoid foods with colors, dyes, preservatives, flavor enhancers and smoked foods.
  • Take 1/2 hour for each meal, eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

2. Deep breathing - Practice deep relaxed breathing twice daily (before rising in the morning and falling asleep in the evening are often convenient times). The most efficient way for you to breathe is diaphragmatic or belly breathing. This is the predominant method of breathing in healthy infants and young children, but as people get older they tend to breathe using their chest and shoulder muscles and less of their diaphragm.

If belly breathing is practiced regularly it can again become second nature to you. This is also a natural way to reduce stress and improve circulation. The Deep Breathing Detox and Alternating Nostril Breathing exercises below will help you to relearn the most healthful way of breathing.

a. Deep Breathing Detox Technique:

  • While lying on your back, place one hand over your chest and the other on your lower abdomen
  • Inhale deeply
  • First feel the lower lungs fill with air as the lower hand rises, then the upper lungs fill as the upper hand rises
  • Exhale deeply
  • First feel the upper, then lower lungs empty of air.

b. Alternating Nostril Breathing: This technique is especially good for those of you who suffer from chronic sinusitis, allergies and lung infections.

  • Sit in a comfortable position in a chair or on the floor.
  • Press the thumb of your left hand against the left side of your nose blocking the air passage. Keep the other fingers of your hand straight, but not touching your face.
  • Breathe in through your right nostril for a count of ten.
  • Move your hand so that the side of your index finger closes the air passage on the right side of your nose.
  • Breathe out of the left nostril for a count of ten.
  • Repeat this five times.
  • Switch hands. Breathe in through the left nostril and out through the right nostril for a count of ten.
  • Repeat 5 times.

3. Exercise - Do aerobic exercise (according to your fitness level.) This may be walking, running, biking, swimming, or aerobic dance, for example. Sessions should last 20 to 45 minutes and be done three to five times weekly. Exercise promotes deep breathing to aid in detoxification.

4. Steam or Sauna - Sit in a sauna for at least 20 minutes each day of your lung detox. This will to allow toxins and mucous to be released from your lungs through excess perspiration / sweating and releasing mucous from your nose and sinuses.

5. Use Herbs and Spices - There are a few herbs and spices / foods that aid in lung detox. These include:

  • Garlic - helps clear your lungs of mucus and help heal lung ailments such as flu, colds and other respiratory problems.
  • Ginger - helps strengthen your lungs and eliminate pollutants, allergens, mucous and other particles.
  • Mullein – acts as an expectorant to bring up mucous, decongesting the lungs during coughing.
  • Lungwort is an excellent lung detoxifier. It is known for clearing mucous from the bronchial tubes and throat while lessening coughs due to lung inflammation or infection.
  • Horehound also works as an expectorant to eliminate excess mucous from the lungs.
  • Skullcap – Boosts your immune system and has an affinity for lung tissue. This increased body function will aid your detox regime.
  • Thyme – It’s anti-microbial and helps to relax the bronchial tubes.

Some of the herbs and spices listed above can be eaten daily and incorporated into your diet like thyme, garlic and ginger. The others can be combined in a Lung Detox tea. Steep one teaspoon of the combined dried herb per cup of boiling water. Drink three cups daily for one to three weeks for lung detoxification.
